The second occasion for the Stormont Car Show to be held was a riveting success with more than six hundred cars displayed and a huge number of visitors attending to see them. Also, the weather could not have been better and no doubt helped the event attract as many as it did.
We parked alongside this Rover SDI 2000 and were immediately smitten.With the Rover on our right and a 4.2 E-Type parked snugly on our left we were in heaven.However, it wasn’t just about big sporty cars or sleek saloons. This wonderfully restored Austin Mini Pickup equalled its bigger rivals in spirit.The burble of a V8 motor is music to an enthusiasts ears and this TVR Chimera sounded like a Rock band!The Porsche Boxster is sometimes overlooked because it doesn’t have 911 in its name. That doesn’t stop it from being a great motor.Who would have thought back in the sixties that the humble Ford Anglia 105E would prove such a historic landmark for the blue oval.A Jaguar XK150 is a beautiful thing.These old Rovers seem to go on forever. Not the prettiest on the block but comfortable, strong and in my experience reliable too.Yep, another Rover, this one with a V8 lump under the bonnet that provided a turn of speed that left observers in awe in its day.Austin Maxi 1750 is a great family hatch. A shame the British motor industry has all but disappeared.Jaguar XJS is a remarkable exercise in passive sophistication.This pretty and rare Lotus Elan bolstered the argument for Lotus to retro build a modern version of the ElanPorsche 944. The best selling Porsche ever.Another favourite a Jaguar 3.8 Mk IIA TVR Tasmin 2.8 Convertible. Not too many of these about today.MG Midget. These used to be the cheap and cheerful way to open top motoring. Valuations on the rise as people realise what a wonderful little car they are.A Vauxhall Chevette 2300 HS was one of the hottest hatches of its day and remains quick even in 2023.Ford Escort Mk II with some modifications.Toyota Crown 2.8 Super Saloon. Fabulous.Lotus Europa. The design was quite controversial in its day.Volvo Amazon or 122 is a Volvo many will recall as strong and enduring for good reason. The BMW 3-Series body shape that arguably attracted buyers in their thousands.Vauxhall Astra 1984-1991. This CD version was the luxury offering. Audi R8. A true super car.Vauxhall Nova GT/E manufactured from 1987 offered 116 mph performance.Ford Consul Classic 2 door built between 1961 and 1963. Initially offered with a 1340cc engine later a 1498cc motor.Opel GT 1900. 1968-73. A rare sight on UK roads.Renault 17 TL 1971-79. These coupes were different enough to appeal to those who wanted to stand out. They also offered brisk performance.Renault Fuego Turbo. Renault’s Ford Capri rival was more expensive but did offer better handling.Audi 80. A very neat compact sloon design the 80 was the mainstay of Audi’s evolving determination to dominate the market.Damiler Dart SP250. Odd design but quick with its V8 motor.A VW Golf Mk I. Ah, where it all began.MG MGB installed with a Rover V8. Nice.Jaguar S-Type R. Supercharger makes this a super car eater.Beautiful Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Coupe. Stunning.Volvo P 1800S. As driven by Roger Moore in the TV series The Saint.Rover P5 V8 1968-1973. Sumptuous luxury and brisk performance. Lovely.Rover 600 series. One of the best looking, IMHO, of the last of the Rovers.VW Polo GT. Have to admit I’d completely forgotten VW produced a GT version of the humble Polo at that time.Ferrari 250 GT Replica. Very attractive.Early VW Bettle.Ford Fiesta XR2 Mk I. Highly desired in its day.Subaru SVX 3.3 Arguably a car before its time.
